Lennar Digital's Sylenth1 is a must have virtual synthesizer for beatmakers and producers worldwide. Sylenth's extremely user friendly interface simplifies the sound design process. I would strongly recommend it if you are interested in creating your own synthesizer presets.
As you probably know, Sylenth is frequently used for rap and hip-hop instrumentals. Today I am going to show you how to make a trap subbass using Sylenth!
I loaded up an INIT patch in Sylenth to start. I changed the POLYPHONY to ONE voice. Since subbasses are extremely deep, we only want one voice to keep the low frequencies under control. Activating multiple pitches at once in the bass frequency spectrum can lead to a sloppy overall mix.
Let's move to OSCILLATOR A1. I changed the sound wave to a SINE and increased the voices to 8. I created so many voices because this is going to be the bulk of our bass patch. I lowered the OCTAVE twice to generate those bass frequencies we love.
Now let's work on the AMPLITUDE ENVELOPE. I lowered the ATTACK to ZERO. Decreasing the attack allows me to be precise when I create my bassline. Precision is very important in trap music, since the drum patterns and melodies are typically hectic. I also gave the subbass a short decay and release to give the conclusion of the sound a softer feel. I kept the sustain at the MAX value.
Our subbass is starting to come together. I changed the sound wave on OSCILLATOR A2 to a SINE as well. I made this Oscillator 4 voices and turned the volume down a bit, since this aspect of the sound is not as important. I lowered the OCTAVE by ONE. I also DETUNED this Oscillator a bit to give the bass a fatter sound.
Now we're going to go to PART B of the synth. For OSCILLATOR B1 I changed the sound wave to TRIANGLE and gave it 6 VOICES. I lowered the OCTAVE by ONE.
For OSCILLATOR B2 I used a TRI-SAW sound wave with 4 VOICES enabled. I lowered this Oscillator by TWO. I turned the volume down on this Oscillator so it wouldn't stand out as much. We want to lead with our SINE tones generated in PART A. We are just using PART B to give the bass more harmonic content.
I made the PART B AMPLITUDE ENVELOPE have the same settings as the AMPLITUDE ENVELOPE in PART A.
Now it's time for some extras! What good is a bass without some DISTORTION? I chose to go with some CLIPPING, but literally any of the distortion options available in Sylenth are worth trying on your bass patches. Don't be afraid to experiment!
As always, you gotta add some EQ to balance the sound out. I boosted frequencies at 90 and 650. You can experiment with this as well. I would suggest boosting anywhere below 150 to give your patch that DEEP BASS.
This next step isn't necessary. I added a LOWPASS filter to roll off some of the HIGH END FREQUENCIES of the patch. Sometimes I play high notes with my subbass and I don't want those notes to interfere with the other higher pitched instruments in my beat.
I made a slight adjustment to the MIX between PART A and PART B. Since I want the SINE tones to be dominant, I raised the volume of PART A.
Finally, I made the sound LEGATO and increased the GLIDE. I prefer my subbass tones to slide a little bit when I play them, but that's up to you!
