Nardwuar vs. Mike Will Made It [Interview]

Posted by Juice God on

Producer Mike Will Made It takes a moment to chop it up at SXSW with legendary reporter Nardwuar about music production. For those who have been living under a rock for the past few years, Mike Will Made It has produced for Miley Cyrus, Rae Sremmurd, Gucci Mane, Future, Juicy J, Young Jeezy, Drake, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, Young Scooter, Makonnen, Lil Wayne, Two-9, Bankroll Fresh, Chief Keef, and many more.

The producer starts the interview by discussing a few of his favorite food places in Atlanta, Georgia. He claims that Gucci Mane loves to go to Ann's Snack Shack. Mike Will and Gucci alternate on deciding where to eat next.

Mike Will Made It shared that Dr. Dre is a big influence on his production style. Even though he doesn't know all of Dr. Dre's early songs, Mike Will is a fan of N.W.A. When Nardwuar gave Mike Will a copy of Dr. Dre's World Class Wrecking Crew "Rapped In Romance" records, the producer was very appreciative.

"I'm appreciating all these gifts man. I'm like a student of music so I feel like for the youth to look at me as like a teacher and a producer for the youth I need all these books and homework to look at."

Mike Will Made It said he recently switched from the MPC 2500 to the MPC Renaissance

"I think it's time to go back to hardware. The whole sound switched and went software. Now it's time for everything to go back to hardware... I only really used the AKAI Pro when I was in New York working with Kanye. That's when the whole sound switched to software. The AKAI Pro is what I could do drums on the best. The Renaissance is what I was used to and that's why I liked the AKAI Pro. I could hook the AKAI Pro up to Fruity Loops and do the drums from there."

Narduwar apparently loves the production on Rae Sremmurd's "No Type." He got Mike Will to confirm that only 7 sounds were used on the beat: 808, Bass, Snare, Hi-Hat, Open Hi-Hat, Piano, and a Clap. Mike Will commented on his signature minimal style:

"I feel like the voice is like the last instrument. Somebody like Swae Lee or Slim Jimi has such an interesting and distinctive voice. The more open the beat is.. the more they're gonna stand out. I feel like the chords on that track really bring out the feeling of that track."

DJ Toomp is another one of Mike Will Made It's big influences.

"DJ Toomp is like legendary. T.I. was my favorite rapper growing up and Toomp was making all the beats for T.I. He would like bring that cowbell out. I was biting his sound for a little bit. I feel like all of my beats needed his sound."

You gotta watch the whole video to hear everything Mike Will talked about. You don't wanna miss it!

I think JuicyDrumKits should collaborate to make a Mike Will Made It drumkit. What do you think? If you believe this is a good idea, hit Mike Will up on Twitter and let him know.
